Insight Session A Descriptors

A1-Max Drummy – Introduction to NPDL

New to Deep Learning? Come learn about the 6 Global Competencies, the 4 Elements of Deep Learning Design, and the systemic framework that supports it.

A2-Tom D’Amico Artificial Intelligence – AI in Education – Ensuring Coherence with Deep Learning

This session will look at how the Ottawa Catholic School Board has positioned artificial intelligence within the Deep Learning teaching/learning framework. Establishing the “Why” for A.l.; practical examples, and connections to global competencies and the 4 elements of Deep Learning will be explored in this session.

A3-Dr. Helene Cunningham & Jenn LeBrun – NPDL as Innovative Districtwide Instructional Framework

The HLPUSD Model leverages NPDL to bolster and align the many initiatives that serve the students across the district. It aims to connect students with the world and their identities, sustain their personal and academic growth, and move the community toward action and reflection through shifts in educational culture and practices. This session includes our rationale, the model’s implementation across our district, and the resources we designed to embed NPDL across content areas in PK-12 practices.

A4-Frank Bradica, Heather Michel, & Gideon Breuls – Bridging Borders: Innovative Learning Partnerships Between Canada and the Netherlands

This session explores the partnership between Canadian and Dutch educators dedicated to Deep Learning. Over the years, we’ve collaborated to implement the four core elements, enhancing classroom impact. This year, our focus shifts to students, prioritizing deep questioning skills to foster curiosity and critical thinking. Through shared insights and challenges, we’ll showcase how cross-border collaboration creates innovative learning environments and offer practical ideas for building sustainable, impactful education partnerships.

Insight Session B Descriptors

B1-HLPUSD Students – Kids in the Hall

Kids of all ages have important things to say. Two high-school students and their middle school principal show what deep learning can be and share how they imagine making a difference in the world.

B2-Alison Kinahan & Brett Walker – Critical Thinking in the Age of AI

Join us for an engaging and insightful session designed to deepen your understanding of critical thinking and its vital role in modern education. This session will explore Critical Thinking and the Deep Learning Progressions, discuss the educational impacts of AI, and learn strategies to link Critical Thinking to Curriculum and School Improvement Plans. Don’t miss this opportunity to elevate your educational approach and make a lasting impact on student achievement.

B3-Gilbert Barraza – Principal Explains How NPDL Brings It All Together

Learn how NPDL supports a busy elementary school’s many student-centred initiatives, and how the 4 elements and 6 competencies inspire teachers and students to approach learning in innovative and powerful ways.

B4-Katie Lewis-Prieur & Kimberley Stiff – OCSB Deep Learning Certification: EmPowering Educators

Discover how the OCSB Deep Learning Certification program is empowering educators to enrich their own understanding of Deep Learning and changing their approach to teaching. Learn how our innovative approach is transforming teaching and learning across our district. This session will provide insights and inspiration for building capacity in your own district. We will share how we’ve recently updated our program to include AI as part of our learning.

Insight Session C Descriptors

C1-Tran Nhu Quynh, Dao Thai Quang, & Lê Nhật Long – Smart Light – LiFi Project in G10 Physics

Embedded in G9 Physics course, this project seeks to revolutionize interior lighting and device control by replacing traditional wiring with fiber optics. By harnessing the principles of total internal reflection, all G9 students are required to design and build a system using Arduino microcontrollers to control light bulbs and other devices. This innovative approach connects learning with real-life problems and asks students to find a safer, more flexible, and visually appealing solution. Beyond technical skills, students will also develop critical thinking, problem-solving, and teamwork abilities.

C2-Katie Lewis-Prieur & Angelina Glynn – OCSB’s Deep Learning Inquiry: How can we take Learning Deeper at Secondary?

Join us to learn about our Ottawa Catholic School Board inquiry into spreading Deep Learning across our high schools. We will share learning from our first year’s inquiries with a theme of Hope, and how we adjusted for this year’s theme: Critical Thinking in an Age of AI. We’ll share how we built our inquiry model, our best practices, some challenges and how our inquiry is positively impacting our schools and our district.

C3-Dra. Linette Martinez & Jenn LeBrun – Designing Authentic Opportunities for Language Learning

Learn how our teachers are using NPDL to bring authentic learning experiences to students in a variety of language learning contexts. Hear one example from our dual language program that highlights the power of NPDL for language learning and empowering student voice. Explore some of the resources and routines that strengthened students’ biliteracy skills, particularly in the areas of oral and written expression. Draft an action plan for how you might design authentic opportunities for language learning with your own students in mind.

C4-Dr. Darren Draper – AI-Driven Deep Learning: Transforming Education in Alpine School District

In Alpine School District, we are leveraging AI to deepen learning for students and staff through innovative practices, coaching partnerships, and personalized learning environments. This session will highlight real-world examples of how AI tools are used to customize learning, foster creativity, and enhance collaboration across classrooms and professional development. Join us to discover actionable strategies and insights from our journey in integrating AI to amplify deep learning.

Insight Session D Descriptors

D1-Nhung Thi-Cam Nguyen, Khanh Nhat-Minh Nguyen, & Quynh Ngoc-Nhu Vo Parental Involvement – Mangrove Reforestation Project in the AI Era

Humanity plays a more vital role in our daily life. This belief is reflected in the Mangrove Reforestation Project. In 1 month, 32 grade 6 students learn about tropical forests and deforestation, and calculate their forest footprint. They create and sell products to fund reforestation, using Excel for financial management. They plan and execute a field trip to plant trees, involving parents in the whole process. The project culminates with students sharing their reflection and self-assessments.

D2-Peiying Chen, Shu-Jing Su, & Barbara Kuo – Al-Empowered Moderation Workshop

This workshop showcases how AI can enhance NPDL lesson plan moderation. Teachers upload their plans to the POE platform, accessible within their PLCs or other professional development settings. The AI offers feedback and fosters deeper professional discussions, ultimately improving student learning. *Participants will need to bring their own lesson plan files with them. *The session can accept at most 60 participants.

D3-Elizabeth Phipps – Transforming Year 9 Boys’ Education through Deep Learning

In 2023, St Aloysius’ College created a new campus intentionally designed to increase our Year 9 students’ agency and engagement in their learning at this crucial stage of their development. We will share the story of this transformational change and how Deep Learning has enabled us to realise our vision.

D4-Phan Gia Bảo, Đặng Thị Quý, & Ho Thi Phuong Thao – Promoting Global Citizenship through International Education Initiatives at LSTS

This insight session is to provide a DL solution that focuses on the establishment of partnerships with schools in different countries to collaborate on global issues discussions and/or cultural exchanges in order to promote global citizenship. LSTS Asian Youth Forum (AYF) 2024 is one of the International Education Initiatives (lEI) that promote global citizenship at LSTS. AYF showcases the positive impacts of the global collaboration of 8 schools from 6 countries through deep learning tasks and the host family program for student participants.
